Veolia Energie ČR committed to energy savings at Centrum Babylon in Liberec

The contract that has just been signed covers a large volume of work in managing energy supplies, i.e. heat, electricity and cold. Under the cooperation agreed, Veolia Energie ČR will invest into modernizing the technical equipment and implement energy savings, and it can guarantee economies in the form of reduced consumption and lower operating costs. The contract is a typical example of Energy Performance Contracting (EPC), as required by European Union directives.
Electricity and heat are generated in a combined cycle, which helps cut emissions significantly. Planned electricity supplies are 5 GWh a year, with 30 TJ of heat, approximately equivalent to the consumption of 850 households. In the summer months a central cooling plant will ensure that temperatures remain comfortable for the centre’s visitors and staff.
“Taking on Centrum Babylon’s thermal installations is a great success for our company”, says Martin Brůha, the Bohemia Region Director at Veolia Energie ČR, and he adds “we have launched a new kind of collaboration, where we are both the project’s guarantor and its operator. Thanks to the new technology we will be installing, this long-term contract will bring savings in the order of several million crowns.”
The multifunctional Centrum Babylon, built on the site of a former textile factory, opened in 1998. Today it covers an area of 30,000 m2 and attracts over 600,000 visitors every year.
